It is a parent's decision whether or not corporal punishment is appropriate. (Within the boundaries of the law, of course.) Random people can *NOT* just walk up to crying children, slap them, and claim that the state's corporal punishment laws permit it. That's assault and this guy is going to go be sitting in jail for a bit. Oh, and I'm not a violent guy, but if he laid a hand on my kid, he'd be in serious trouble. I've done a blog post about the Adult-Parent line ( http://www.techydad.com/?p=428 ). While my incident wasn't violent in nature, it was starkly clear that the person trying to "parent" my kid was stepping over a line. Just because someone is an adult doesn't give them disciplinary powers over every child in their sight.
